Residents of Gbawe and its environs in the Greater Accra Region now have a new reason to prioritize their health and fitness. Complit Fitness officially opened on Saturday, October 4, at the TotalEnergies Service Station Building in Gbawe. The facility promises to provide a modern, welcoming space for total body wellness, positioning itself as a lifestyle hub where fitness meets health education, motivation, and community support. This new initiative comes at a critical time when Ghana faces a rising burden of Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs).
The Ghana Health Service and WHO report that NCDs account for about 45% of all deaths in Ghana, with major drivers including hypertension, stroke, diabetes, obesity, and heart disease. These conditions are linked to sedentary lifestyles, poor diet, and physical inactivity. Statistics show that 1 in 3 adults in Greater Accra has elevated blood pressure, often undiagnosed, and Ghana's adult overweight/obesity prevalence is estimated at over 30%, higher in urban areas. Physical inactivity contributes to over 20% of NCD risk.
Complit Fitness aims to address these health concerns by providing a comprehensive fitness experience. The dedicated cardio area is equipped with treadmills and aerobic equipment, allowing members to improve their cardiovascular health, lower blood pressure, and boost their mood through endorphins. The facility's owner, Mr. Kwamina Ackun-Wood, emphasized that the hub is designed to be a community-focused fitness space, offering elite coaching and a supportive environment close to home.
Beyond its state-of-the-art equipment, Complit Fitness focuses on building a community through consistent coaching and follow-through. Certified trainers provide guidance, monthly reviews, and safe training schedules tailored to Accra's demanding work and family life. The hub operates from 0500 hours to 2200 hours, Mondays to Saturdays, and 1300 hours to 2200 hours on Sundays, welcoming both beginners and athletes into its projected 900-member community.
The Strength Training Zone at Complit Fitness is equipped with dumbbells, kettlebells, and modern resistance machines, helping members build lean muscle, increase metabolism, and strengthen bones and joints. Health professionals recommend strength training at least twice weekly to prevent age-related muscle loss, improve posture, and enhance functional strength. Additionally, the facility offers group fitness classes that cater to beginners and advanced enthusiasts, promoting consistency, reducing stress and anxiety, and building accountability.
Complit Fitness aligns with the government's MahamaCare initiative, launched in 2025 to tackle the rising NCD burden through preventive and community-based care. The facility supports MahamaCare's preventive health pillar in three key ways: prevention over prescription, community screening and education, and reducing the health system's burden. By investing in shared future fitness, Complit Fitness aims to support preventive health, mental clarity, productivity, and longevity.
The public is invited to join the Complit Fitness movement, with the facility offering a clean, spacious, and well-ventilated environment, professional trainers, and personalized routines and lifestyle tips to maximize results and prevent injury. As Mr. Ackun-Wood noted, "Your health is your wealth to invest in." With its comprehensive approach to fitness and community support, Complit Fitness is poised to become a leading hub for health and strength in Gbawe.
