Chinese steel manufacturer Hongwang New Materials Technology Co., Ltd is planning to expand its investment into Malawi as part of its strategy to establish manufacturing operations in Africa. The company's Deputy General Manager for Administration, Deng Weiquan, announced this during a visit by African journalists under the China International Press Communication Centre programme to their intelligent manufacturing factory in Hunan Province.

According to Deng Weiquan, Hongwang New Materials has signed a long-term investment agreement with Tanzania and is developing factories in Malawi, Madagascar, and other countries in the region. The company is working with China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs on a 'Two Countries, Two Parks' initiative, linking an industrial park in Loudi, Hunan, with another in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. This initiative aims to facilitate the transfer of technology, capital, and equipment to Africa.

The company's Hunan project was established in September 2021, with construction starting in February 2022, and its first phase began operations in March 2023. Hongwang New Materials currently records annual sales of about 3.5 billion yuan and employs around 850 people. The company specializes in producing high-grade silicon steel, also known as electrical steel, which is an important material used in mobile phones, power tools, and vehicles due to its role in converting electricity and magnetism.

Economist Maury Siyasiya expressed optimism about the proposed investment, saying it could help reduce Malawi's reliance on imported steel and create opportunities for local businesses. He emphasized the need for the government to ensure that the proposed investment translates into actual production, jobs, and economic benefits for Malawians.

The investment plans by Hongwang New Materials Technology Co., Ltd come as Malawi seeks to boost its manufacturing sector and reduce its dependence on imports. The country's economy has been facing challenges, including a high import bill, which the government is working to address through initiatives aimed at promoting local production and investment.

Deng Weiquan explained that the company plans to transfer technology, capital, and equipment to Africa, where products will be processed for local use, exported to China, or sold in other markets. This approach is expected to contribute to the growth of Malawi's economy and provide opportunities for local businesses and entrepreneurs.

The proposed investment by Hongwang New Materials Technology Co., Ltd in Malawi is expected to have a positive impact on the country's economy and create new opportunities for growth and development. The company’s plans to establish manufacturing operations in Malawi and other African countries are part of its strategy to expand its presence in the region.
