A tragic incident has occurred in the United Arab Emirates, claiming the life of Cassius Newton, the son of former Chelsea player and coach Eddie Newton. Cassius, 34, died during a desert hike in the mountainous Wadi Naqab region of the UAE on July 18. His friend, Aran Martinson, also lost his life during the hike. The two men had set out at around 7am local time, despite concerns about the extreme heat.

According to an inquest at Essex Coroner's Court, Cassius had called his wife at around 2am to inform her about the planned hike. She had advised him against going due to the expected high temperatures in the area, which could reach up to 40C and feel even hotter inside the canyons. Cassius had also been out the previous night, and his wife was worried that he had not had enough sleep and had not sufficiently charged his phone before setting out.

The wives of both men eventually contacted authorities after they failed to hear from them for several hours, prompting a rescue operation. The two men were found between 3km and 4km from where they had parked their vehicle, with their bodies located about 350 metres apart. Both men were taken to a hospital in Ras Al Khaimah, but they were pronounced dead later that day. The inquest heard that both men died after their body temperatures rose severely, resulting in organ failure.

The route they took was a recreational hike on a designated trail and would normally take about four hours to complete. Cassius and Martinson had both recently moved to Ras Al Khaimah, where they met through their work at a global company. An inquest into their deaths was held, which ruled that the deaths were the result of misadventure, describing the incident as "an intentional trip with unintended consequences".

Eddie Newton travelled to the UAE to identify his son's body following the tragedy. As a former Chelsea player, Newton had a strong connection to the club, having played for Chelsea before going on to serve two spells as the club's assistant manager. Cassius had also previously been part of Chelsea's academy. The club expressed its devastation following Cassius Newton's death.

Messages between Martinson and his wife were also read during the inquest, revealing their conversations before the hike. After several hours without hearing from him, his wife sent a message expressing her distress. Martinson's wife later paid tribute to him online, describing him as "incredibly driven, hardworking and ambitious". The incident has raised concerns about the risks of hiking in extreme heat.

The inquest's findings have highlighted the importance of taking necessary precautions when engaging in outdoor activities in extreme weather conditions. Area coroner Michelle Brown emphasised the risks associated with hiking in high temperatures. The incident serves as a reminder to individuals to plan and prepare carefully before undertaking such activities, especially in regions with extreme weather conditions.
