The Union of Women in the Oil Zone (KDLP) of Komé, in the Logone Oriental province, recently organized a two-day workshop from September 22-23, 2026, to analyze the legal framework for promoting Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights (SRHR). The event was presided over by the sub-prefect of Komé, Alhafis Djimet Idriss. This workshop is part of the Feminist Fund in Action project, funded by Oxfam and the French Development Agency (AFD).
The workshop aims to provide participants from civil society organizations, including women's rights organizations, with a comprehensive understanding of the legal policy landscape and advocacy for SRHR in the project's intervention zone. The president of the Union of Women in the Oil Zone of Komé, Mme Nekarnodji Mila, highlighted the importance of comprehensive sexuality education, access to modern contraception, and safe maternity care in protecting young people, particularly women and girls.
Despite the importance of these services, many women and girls in the project's intervention zones lack access to modern contraceptive methods due to taboos and misinformation. Mme Nekarnodji Mila noted that this deprives them of the necessary tools to protect themselves and live a fulfilling and risk-free sex life. To address these challenges, three priority areas have been identified: strengthening advocacy, breaking the silence through community awareness campaigns, and promoting continuity of care in health centers.
The sub-prefect of Komé, Alhafis Djimet Idriss, emphasized that the health of populations, particularly women, girls, and adolescents, is not only a medical issue but also a fundamental human dignity and social justice concern. He noted that the state has taken steps to promote SRHR and protect citizens' physical integrity and autonomy through laws and commitments.
During the two-day workshop, participants will familiarize themselves with modules on the current SRHR environment, progress made, challenges encountered, and strategies for advocacy. The workshop will also focus on the role of men and boys in advocating for SRHR and addressing sexual health. The participants are expected to gain a deeper understanding of the issues and develop effective strategies for promoting SRHR in their communities.
The project aims to ensure that no one is left behind in accessing SRHR services. The organizers believe that by empowering women's organizations and promoting SRHR, they can contribute to the development of communities and improve the overall well-being of women and girls in the Logone Oriental region. The workshop is seen as a crucial step towards achieving these goals.
