The Burkinabé customs department has taken a proactive approach to supporting the families of its agents who have died in the line of duty. On October 3, 2026, in Ouagadougou, the department, through its "Solidarity Cell" and with the support of Director-General Dr. Yves Kafando, donated school supplies and scholarships to the orphans of these agents. This initiative aims to ease the burden on the families and ensure the children can continue their education.
The donation, which includes school bags, stationery, soap, and financial envelopes, will benefit around 30 children who have lost their parents while the agents were on duty. The customs department's effort is in line with the vision of President Captain Ibrahim Traoré, who emphasizes the importance of taking care of widows and orphans. This initiative is also a testament to the department's commitment to its social responsibilities.
Director-General Dr. Yves Kafando emphasized that while achieving good results is crucial, it is equally important to prioritize the social aspect. He expressed his admiration for the mothers of these children, who continue to work hard to provide for their families despite the challenges they face. Dr. Kafando also shared his personal experience as an orphan, highlighting the importance of perseverance.
The mothers of the beneficiaries, who are part of the Association of Widows and Orphans of the Customs Family (AVOFD), have expressed their gratitude for the donation. They believe that this support will enable their children to attend school without worry and are calling for the initiative to be sustained. Alimata Maré/Ouédraogo, president of the association, thanked the donors and emphasized the significance of this gesture.
This first edition of the donation targeted orphans who are primary school students or have been admitted to sixth grade and whose parents died while on duty. The Association Internationale des Douaniers Francophones (AIDF), which organized the donation, aims to extend its support to orphans in other classes, including university students, depending on the resources available.
Colonel David Goumroimama Onadja, president of the AIDF national delegation, believes that this donation is not just an act of charity but a duty of remembrance. He emphasized that the association's efforts are voluntary and rely on contributions from its members. The Director-General of Customs has requested that this activity be made sustainable and has expressed hope that it will be replicated in other administrations.
The AIDF is an international network of customs agents from French-speaking countries. The organization aims to promote cooperation and solidarity among its members. The Burkinabé customs department's initiative is a shining example of the organization's commitment to supporting its members and their families in need.
