The nation of Burkina Faso recently celebrated the 66th anniversary of its national armed forces. The official ceremony took place at the Place de la Révolution and was presided over by the President of the Legislative Assembly of the People, representing the Head of State, Captain Ibrahim Traoré. The event featured a parade, honorary distinctions, and a solemn call to citizen mobilization. A total of 56 personnel from the armed forces, security forces, and civilian auxiliaries received decorations.

The decorations included eight military honor medals, 24 military medals, five combatant crosses, eight firefighter honor medals, four commemorative medals, and four volunteer defense medals. The volunteer defense medal, established by decree on October 1, 2025, rewards eminent services rendered to national defense. One of the recipients, VDP Issaka Guira, who lost a leg in an improvised explosive device explosion, expressed his firm commitment to the fight against terrorism.

The celebrations highlighted the application of the law on the military reserve, which aims to organize the participation of able citizens in defense and support operations. The law, which came into effect on May 26, 2026, provides for the mobilization of citizens, divided into first- and second-order reservists. The Minister of State, Minister of War and Patriotic Defense, General Célestin Simporé, emphasized that national defense cannot rely solely on active forces and requires the organized mobilization of the entire population.

General Simporé also noted that the military reserve is not intended to turn every citizen into a soldier but to provide a legal and disciplined framework for national defense. He reported that the enrollment of reservists has generated significant enthusiasm among the population, with over 86,000 registrations in less than a month, exceeding the target of 100,000 reservists by the end of 2026.

The event also recognized the contributions of female personnel, with Sergeant-chef Mariam Ki dedicating her medal to all women in uniform who work in the shadows, demonstrating discipline and discretion. The decorations were seen as a symbol of increased responsibility and a motivation to continue serving the country with determination and loyalty.

The commemorations continued with an official visit to hospitalized war wounded, highlighting the government's commitment to caring for those who have made sacrifices for national defense. The celebrations also acknowledged the role of the military in defending the nation and promoting national sovereignty.

The theme of this year's commemoration, "National Armed Forces and Military Reserve for Sovereign Defense of the Fatherland," underscores the importance of the military reserve in national defense. The event demonstrated the government's efforts to mobilize citizens and promote a culture of patriotism and national defense.
