The British internal intelligence agency, MI5, has issued a warning about a Chinese research institution allegedly funding academic research in sensitive technological areas, potentially enhancing China's state security ministry's technical capabilities in espionage. According to a report published by Al Arabiya, MI5 stated that the China General Institute for Research on Technology (CGTRI) has strong links with China's State Security Ministry.

MI5 reported that over 100 UK-affiliated academics have participated in research projects funded by China's State Security Ministry through CGTRI. Some academics may have been unaware that the institution was funding the projects they were involved in. The agency emphasized that the projects included research in areas such as artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and secure communication systems.

The research projects also covered technologies like steganography, which involves hiding information within images and digital files. MI5 believes that the nature of this research and its potential use in security and intelligence fields makes collaboration with the Chinese institution a risk that goes beyond traditional academic cooperation.

MI5 stated that some academics and institutions may have dealt with CGTRI in good faith, unaware of its connections to China's State Security Ministry. The agency has urged academic institutions to review any existing or planned cooperation with CGTRI and advised researchers to verify the source of funding for research partnerships with Chinese institutions.

The British government has taken steps to address the issue, with Security Minister Dan Jarvis sending letters to heads of British universities, requesting they support staff in ending any arrangements with the Chinese institution and ensuring compliance with the National Security Act of 2023.

This warning is part of a series of alerts issued by British authorities regarding China's attempts to obtain sensitive information through academic and research circles. In June 2026, intelligence agencies from the "Five Eyes" alliance issued a joint warning about Chinese military intelligence agencies targeting individuals with access to sensitive information through professional networking platforms.

The "Five Eyes" alliance warned that Chinese intelligence elements were using fake companies and commercial fronts to recruit individuals with access to sensitive information, often through job advertisements or consultancy offers.
