The Second Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), Matilda Asante-Asiedu, has been appointed as the authorised representative of the BoG Governor on the Board of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod). This appointment was announced several months ago and took effect on Monday, May 11, 2026. According to a letter from the BoG, Asante-Asiedu will attend and participate in all GoldBod Board Meetings on behalf of the Governor.
The Ghana Gold Board is a body corporate established by an Act of Parliament (ACT 1140) in 2025 to oversee, regulate, and undertake various activities related to gold and other precious minerals in Ghana. The GoldBod took over the rights, obligations, assets, liabilities, and workforce of the Precious Minerals Marketing Company (PMMC) Limited. This move aimed to strengthen industry regulation and optimize national benefits from the precious mineral trading sector.
The Precious Minerals Marketing Company (PMMC) Limited, an offshoot of the Ghana Diamond Marketing Board, has a long history dating back to 1963. Initially established as the Ghana Diamond Marketing Board, it was charged with purchasing and marketing Ghana's diamonds. Over the years, the company underwent several transformations, with changes in its name and functions, before being converted to a Limited Liability Company in 2000.
In 2016, the PMMC was appointed the national assayer by the government of Ghana. This appointment was a significant step towards strengthening the regulation of the precious mineral trading sector. The PMMC's functions include grading, assaying, and valuing gold, diamonds, and other precious minerals in the country.
The establishment of the Ghana GoldBod in 2025 marked a significant milestone in the country's efforts to restructure and streamline the precious mineral trading sector. The GoldBod initiative is a product of extensive stakeholder consultations and aims to maximize foreign exchange inflows, gold reserve accumulation, and value addition for sustainable growth and transformation.
As the authorised representative of the BoG Governor on the GoldBod Board, Matilda Asante-Asiedu will contribute to deliberations, exercise all rights and responsibilities vested in the Governor, and represent the Governor's interests. Her appointment is expected to bring significant expertise and experience to the Board, given her position as the Second Deputy Governor of the BoG.
The changes in the GoldBod Board composition reflect the government's efforts to ensure effective regulation and oversight of the precious mineral trading sector. With Matilda Asante-Asiedu's appointment, the GoldBod Board is expected to continue its work in maximizing the benefits of Ghana's precious mineral resources for the country's sustainable growth and development.
