The Faculty of Economics and Management Sciences at Bayero University, Kano, has announced plans to host its 5th International Conference and Doctoral Colloquium. The conference, themed "Sustainable Governance and the Green Economy: Strategies for Addressing Insecurity and Promoting Inclusive Development in Africa," will bring together academics, policymakers, business leaders, government officials, and development practitioners from within and outside Nigeria. The event will be held at the FEMS Theatre, CBN Centre of Excellence of the school.
The conference aims to provide a platform for stakeholders to exchange ideas, present research findings, and develop practical solutions to governance and development challenges. According to Prof. Kabir Tahir Hamid, Chairman of the Local Organising Committee, the theme was informed by growing concerns over insecurity, poverty, unemployment, environmental degradation, weak institutions, and economic instability across Nigeria and the African continent. The conference will feature technical sessions, paper presentations, and a doctoral colloquium aimed at strengthening research capacity among postgraduate students and emerging scholars.
Keynote addresses will be delivered by prominent individuals, including the Chairman of the Nigerian Exchange Group, Dr. Umaru Kwairanga, and the Director-General of the National Agency for the Great Green Wall, Saleh Abubakar. Lead papers will be presented by Prof. Auwalu Haruna, Director of ABU Zaria Business School, and Dr. Elvis Tangam, UNDP Climate, Peace and Security Adviser. The conference will also feature a pre-conference research methodology workshop scheduled for November 2, 2026.
The Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Management Sciences, Prof. Muhammad Aminu Isa, will host the conference, while the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Haruna Musa, will serve as Chief Host. The Chairman of the Bank of Industry, Dr. Mansur Muhtar, is billed to chair the occasion, and the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Dala Foods, Alhaji Ali Safiyanu Madugu, is expected to serve as Guest of Honour.
The conference is expected to generate policy recommendations on governance, insecurity, climate finance, entrepreneurship, digital transformation, and sustainable economic development. Participation will be open to academics, researchers, postgraduate students, policymakers, public officials, business executives, and development partners, with both physical and virtual attendance options available. Outstanding papers presented at the conference will be considered for publication in the faculty's and departmental peer-reviewed journals.
The conference will serve as a platform for advancing policy dialogue on the links between governance, security, environmental sustainability, and economic development in Africa. According to Prof. Hamid, the challenges confronting Nigeria and Africa require collective action, innovative thinking, and practical solutions. Universities have a critical responsibility to generate knowledge that informs public policy and contributes to societal development.
The three-day conference will take place from November 3 to 5, 2026, and will provide a valuable opportunity for stakeholders to engage with pressing issues facing Nigeria and Africa. By bringing together experts and practitioners, the conference aims to contribute to the development of effective strategies for addressing insecurity and promoting inclusive development through sustainable governance and green economy strategies.
