Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, has made a comeback to active politics by joining the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC). He was welcomed into the party by NDC National Leader, Senator Seriake Dickson, and other party leaders in Abuja, who presented him with his membership card. Lawal's return to politics is seen as a significant boost to the NDC, with Dickson describing him as an experienced political organiser and mobiliser.

Dickson urged Lawal to utilise his political experience and contacts to fortify the party's structures, address challenges, and guide its candidates and campaign teams. He emphasised that the party would also rely on Lawal's expertise beyond the two zones as it prepares for the 2027 general election. This underscores the significance of Lawal's return to politics and the expectations placed upon him.
The NDC leader also addressed the role of support groups in grassroots mobilisation, emphasising that they should work alongside the party rather than assuming its functions. Support groups are expected to mobilise voters, promote the party and its candidates, and link grassroots supporters with the party's campaign structures. This clarification comes amid recent controversy over a presidential campaign council announced by the Obi-Kwankwaso support movement.
Lawal revealed that his decision to return to politics was motivated by concerns over the country's pressing challenges, including insecurity, economic hardship, poverty, and hunger. He had previously remained active in the All Progressives Congress (APC) but later left due to differences over the party's political direction. Lawal initially considered retiring from politics but reconsidered after reflecting on the future of Nigerians, particularly the younger generation.
The former SGF expressed his support for the NDC presidential ticket of Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso, citing their previous records in Anambra and Kano states as a basis for his confidence in their approach to national governance.
