Hon. Aminata Sesay, a member of parliament for the All People's Congress (APC), has called for greater political inclusivity in Sierra Leone's peace efforts. Sesay emphasized the need for the government to accelerate the implementation of the unity agreement, ensuring equal treatment under the law for all citizens. Her comments come after the recently concluded National Unity and Social Cohesion Conference.

Sesay discussed the conference on SLIK TV, stressing that peace efforts should involve citizens across political affiliations, rather than focusing primarily on supporters of the ruling Sierra Leone People's Party (SLPP). She questioned the recognition given to conference participants, arguing that former President Ernest Bai Koroma should have received a prestigious peace award in recognition of his status as a former head of state.

The MP also addressed demonstrations and public order, stating that police conduct could contribute to violence during protests. Sesay maintained that peaceful protest is a democratic right that should be respected, regardless of citizens' regional, religious, or political affiliations. She added that the government must go beyond enacting laws and implementing policies to listen to public concerns and respond to citizens' needs.

Sesay defended appeals for mercy on behalf of individuals facing legal consequences, citing the case of Zainab Sheriff. She argued that musicians and other citizens should be able to appeal to the First Lady for consideration, and also cited the President's constitutional power to grant pardons. However, she stressed that the law should apply equally to Sheriff and others accused of similar offences.

Sesay alleged that some SLPP supporters accused of serious crimes had been released without prosecution, raising concerns about consistency and accountability in the justice system. These allegations were not independently verified for this report. The MP emphasized the need for equal application of the law, regardless of political affiliation.

Sesay welcomed Port Loko District's recognition as Sierra Leone's second-most peaceful district, describing the distinction as a source of pride for her home district, an opposition stronghold. While acknowledging progress on the unity agreement, she expressed concern about the slow pace of implementation and warned that time was running out.

Sesay urged the government to take decisive action to fulfil its commitments, stressing that political inclusivity, respect for democratic rights, and equal application of the law were essential to strengthening national unity. The MP's comments highlight the ongoing challenges in Sierra Leone's peace efforts and the need for continued dialogue and cooperation.
