Dr. Paddy Iyamu, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for Oredo Federal Constituency in the 2027 general election, has made a commitment to sponsor legislation that protects vulnerable individuals and promotes good governance. This pledge was made during a visit to the Edo State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in Benin City, where party leaders and candidates were formally introduced to journalists.
As a former Edo State Commissioner for Education, Iyamu outlined his legislative priorities, which include education, healthcare, women’s empowerment, and youth development. He emphasized that his experience in public service has provided him with the necessary knowledge and contacts to attract development projects and deliver results for the people of Oredo Federal Constituency.
Iyamu cited his achievements as education commissioner, including the construction and inauguration of about 6.2 kilometres of internal roads at a state-owned polytechnic through engagements with relevant authorities in Abuja. This experience has strengthened his resolve to use the platform of the National Assembly to attract federal projects and advance the interests of his constituents.
Education is a critical tool for breaking the cycle of poverty, tackling insecurity, and expanding opportunities for young people, according to Iyamu. During his tenure as commissioner, nearly 100 schools were reconstructed and remodelled within one year, alongside improvements in classroom facilities and the provision of furniture for pupils.
The APC candidate also emphasized the importance of making schools safer and more conducive to learning. He mentioned that his administration began implementing aspects of the Safe School Initiative before the Federal Government’s intervention. If elected, he would prioritize legislation and policies to achieve this goal.
Iyamu promised to promote initiatives that would improve access to health services and support programmes aimed at improving the well-being of residents. He also emphasized the need to empower women economically, citing the positive effects on families and communities. His foundation has supported women through various initiatives, and he intends to expand such interventions if given the mandate.
On youth development, Iyamu noted that young people are critical to societal progress and deserve opportunities to acquire relevant skills and build sustainable livelihoods. He cited partnerships facilitated during his tenure as commissioner, including an agreement with Chinese counterparts that enabled some young people from Edo State to travel to China.
