The Director General of the Presidential Support Organisation, Umar Jijiwa, has shed light on the disagreement between All Progressives Congress (APC) governors and Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, regarding the Rainbow Coalition. According to Jijiwa, the APC governors should prioritize delivering President Bola Tinubu in 2027. Jijiwa described politics as evolving, stating that archaic ideas should not hinder progress. He emphasized that the Rainbow Coalition is an example of this evolution.
Jijiwa explained that Wike's comments about the APC governors being politically lazy were made because they are not members of the PDP and should field candidates in their party. He noted that Wike has worked tirelessly for Asiwaju while still being in the PDP. Wike's reason for supporting Asiwaju is rooted in his belief in zoning and the need for a southern president. The 2019 election saw no southern candidate run for president, which led to Wike's current actions.
The concept of zoning and consensus is considered old school by Jijiwa, who believes such ideas should be extinct. He stated that during primary elections, many irregularities occurred, and it's essential for individuals to hold themselves responsible. Jijiwa also mentioned that President Tinubu is aware of Wike's political activities and will likely endorse anything that gives him a political advantage in the competition.
Jijiwa compared the situation to the United States, where two dominant parties exist, and such conflicts are rare. However, he acknowledged that human beings can change their beliefs and allegiances. The African Democratic Congress (ADC) and Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) are against Asiwaju, and Jijiwa believes it's better for APC members with capacity and followers to join Wike's faction of the PDP.
The spokesperson of Wike's camp urged Wike to support the party's presidential candidate and not back Tinubu. Jijiwa chose not to comment on the statement, saying he is not a member of their party. He emphasized that APC has taken advantage of Wike's actions and will continue to do so in the competition.
Wike alleged that some APC governors oppose the coalition due to their interest in the next Senate presidency and speakership, without mentioning names. Jijiwa hinted that Governor Hope might be one of them, accusing him of trying to run for the Senate while still in office as a governor. He found it confusing for someone to leave their position as governor to win elections.
Jijiwa concluded that Nigerians need to understand the dynamics at play, particularly regarding Governor Hope and his aspirations. As a minister and governor, their relationship and interests may be influencing their actions. The situation remains complex, with various stakeholders vying for positions and influence within the APC and PDP.
