The Algerian government is set to launch a major railway project in the Bejaia province, despite opposition from local residents and business owners. The project, which involves doubling the railway line between Béni Mansour and Béjaïa, aims to improve transportation links in the region. The project was first proposed in 2008 and has been delayed due to various issues, including opposition to the chosen route. The project is expected to be completed with an investment of 106 billion Algerian dinars.

The Wali of Bejaia, Ahmed Maabed, has urged the representative of the National Agency for Studies, Monitoring and Implementation of Railway Investments (ANESRIF) to start installing companies involved in the project. The Wali emphasized the need to launch the project quickly to save time. The project involves upgrading the railway line to allow for faster travel, with speeds of up to 160 km/h for passengers and 100 km/h for freight.

The project has faced significant opposition from local residents and business owners, who are concerned about the impact on the regional economy and housing. The chosen route has been rejected by owners of production units in the Taharacht activity zone in Akbou and Ighzer Amokrane, as well as citizens in communes affected by the route. A total of 274 oppositions have been resolved through negotiations between the Wali and landowners.

According to ANESRIF, a total of 60 cases of opposition have been recorded in Tazmalt and 115 in Akbou. The agency is working to address the concerns of local residents and business owners. The project involves not only doubling the railway line but also renovating nine stations, building 55 engineering structures, including three tunnels, and eliminating 98 level crossings.

The project is expected to have a significant impact on the region's development, with the Wali highlighting its importance alongside the autoroute penetration. A link between the Bejaia port and the railway line is also planned, which will facilitate the transportation of goods. The project aims to improve the transportation infrastructure in the region and boost economic growth.

The Wali has expressed optimism about resolving the outstanding issues, citing the success of his campaign to sensitize landowners and lift the blockade on gas pipeline construction sites. The government has invested heavily in the project, which is expected to have a major impact on the region's economy.

Once completed, the project is expected to significantly improve transportation links in the region, with faster travel times and increased capacity for both passengers and freight. The project is a key part of Algeria's efforts to upgrade its transportation infrastructure and promote economic growth.
