Algeria has launched a new approach aimed at enhancing energy security and fostering international partnerships. The initiative was announced during the 14th edition of the Nabak 2026 conference and exhibition in Oran, which was attended by high-ranking officials, including Minister of State for Energy and Mining Mohamed Arkab and Minister of Energy and Renewable Energies Merad Ajal. The event brought together over 450 exhibitors and 230 speakers.

The Nabak 2026 conference and exhibition, held under the theme "Towards a new approach to energy mix: from energy transition to energy addition," aims to ensure energy security, affordability, and carbon reduction. The event featured a range of activities, including a round of tenders and partnerships based on innovation and local content. Minister Arkab invited companies and investors to take advantage of the opportunities presented by the 2026 Algerian tender round.

The Algerian government has emphasized the importance of natural gas as a key component of the country's energy mix. Minister Arkab stated that natural gas will continue to play a vital role in Algeria's energy landscape, serving as a source of energy flexibility and an element in industrial development. He also highlighted the need for a balanced approach that leverages various energy sources to meet growing demand while promoting efficiency and reducing emissions.

The concept of "energy addition" was also discussed during the conference, with a focus on integrating different energy sources rather than replacing them. Amin Ramini, President of the Regulatory Authority for Hydrocarbons, emphasized the need for a smart and realistic approach that combines oil, gas, and renewable energy. He highlighted Algeria's strengths, including stability, a modern regulatory framework, and a favorable business climate.

Algeria's strategic location and resources make it an important player in the global energy landscape. Sonatrach's CEO, Noureddine Dawdi, noted that Algeria is well-positioned to serve as a hub between Africa and Europe, with a range of projects aimed at enhancing regional integration and connecting African resources to European markets. The TSGP project, which aims to develop a gas pipeline across the Sahara, was cited as a key example of this effort.

The development of hydrogen energy was also a key topic of discussion during the conference. Minister Ajal emphasized Algeria's commitment to developing renewable hydrogen and building a national value chain that encompasses energy production, equipment manufacturing, storage, and transportation. He also highlighted the importance of investing in research and development and training skilled personnel.

The conference also featured a range of bilateral meetings and discussions on potential partnerships. Minister Arkab met with executives from major international companies, including BTT Thailand and OQ Group, to explore opportunities for cooperation in areas such as exploration, production, and petrochemicals. The meetings were seen as an opportunity to strengthen ties with international partners and promote Algeria as a strategic destination for investment.
