The 2026 Global Tourism Report by the World Economic Forum has revealed that Algeria has made significant strides in the tourism sector, outperforming its pre-pandemic levels. According to the report, Algeria now ranks 89th out of 110 countries globally, a notable improvement from its previous ranking. This progress is attributed to enhancements in transportation, hospitality, connectivity, and the promotion of natural and cultural heritage.
The global tourism rankings assess various practical aspects, including hotel rates, visa facilitation, transportation networks, UNESCO heritage richness, and the distribution of tourist flows. The top 10 countries in the rankings are dominated by European nations, with Japan securing the first spot, followed closely by the United States and Spain. Australia ranks fourth, France fifth, and the rankings continue with Germany, the United Kingdom, China, Switzerland, and Italy completing the top 10.
Algeria's improvement in the tourism sector is marked by a 3.6% increase, which has enabled it to climb four places in the global rankings compared to 2024. When compared to pre-pandemic levels in 2019, Algeria has shown a 6.1% rise, resulting in a gain of five places. This progress positions Algeria ahead of about 20 nations, primarily from the African continent. The country's overall score is 3.52 out of 7.
In the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, Algeria ranks at the lower end, trailing behind major players like Morocco, Tunisia, and Egypt, which ranks 63rd globally. Despite this, Algeria's tourism sector is on a positive trajectory, showing consistent improvement from 2024 and 2019. The country's advancements in transportation, hospitality, and showcasing its natural and cultural heritage are key drivers for its continued rise in the global rankings.
When compared to neighboring countries, Tunisia ranks 82nd, experiencing a slight decline of 0.2% and losing four places since 2024. Over a longer period, Tunisia's score has only increased by 1.1% since 2019, resulting in a loss of five positions. Conversely, Morocco ranks 70th, demonstrating a strong dynamic with a gain of seven positions from 2024 and a significant rise of 14 places compared to pre-pandemic levels.
The World Economic Forum's report highlights that Europe continues to dominate the top spots in global tourism.
