The Umunneochi Local Government Area of Abia State has disputed a recent police report on the discovery of 28 human skulls in two communities in the area. According to the local government, the incident occurred in August 2024, not September 2026 as reported by the police. The media team of the Local Government Chairman, Sunday Afurobi, stated that the information circulating on social media is not a recent incident.

The police had reported that they discovered 28 human skulls and bones in two forests at Umuaku and Nneato, Umunneochi LGA. However, the local government claims that the site is an abandoned camp of suspected kidnappers situated at the boundary between Aku community in Okigwe LGA of Imo State and Nneato in Umunneochi LGA. The site was uncovered by joint government security operatives working with local vigilantes in August 2024.

The Umunneochi LGA insists that the council is presently safe and peaceful. The local government explained that the latest viral video of the site was taken on September 26, 2026, during routine security operations by operatives of the Abia State Police Command and local vigilantes. The video was not related to a recent discovery of a criminal hideout.

The local government urged residents of Isuochi and Umunneochi Local Government Area to remain calm and disregard the misleading impression that there has been a recent discovery of a criminal hideout in Isuochi. The council stated that the information is not a recent incident and should not be seen as such.

The police report had claimed that the suspected perpetrators escaped without being apprehended. However, the local government did not provide any information on the suspects or the investigation. The incident has caused concern among residents, with some expressing frustration and fear.

The Umunneochi LGA's response to the police report aims to clarify the situation and prevent the spread of misinformation. The local government is working to maintain peace and stability in the area, with the help of security operatives and local vigilantes.

The incident highlights the ongoing security challenges in Abia State and the need for effective communication between security agencies and local governments. The situation remains under control, with the local government and security operatives working together to prevent further incidents.
