The Leprosy Mission, Nigeria (TLMN) has announced plans to bring together 500,000 persons, including Muslims and Christians, to promote peaceful coexistence in four Niger communities. The project, in partnership with the TLM, Denmark, aims to foster unity and tolerance among residents of Bosso, Chanchaga, Tunga, and Dokoko communities. The initiative is set to kick off with an inception meeting tagged "Together in Faith and Freedom (Freedom of Religion or Belief)".
According to the Head of Program and Operations, TLMN, Mr Pius Ogbu, the project seeks to address issues of discrimination and challenges facing its operations. He noted that as humans, people should live together in love and unity, rather than allowing religious differences to cause division. The project will engage 1,020 religious persons initially and is expected to conclude by December 2027.
The TLMN peace project aims to tackle several challenges, including stereotyping and mistrust between victims along faith groups, limited knowledge, weak community protections, economic pressure, and political manipulation. The project also seeks to address the exclusion of marginalized groups and weak institutional responses. By promoting peaceful coexistence, the initiative hopes to create a more harmonious environment for residents.
The TLMN Head of Resource Mobilisation, Mr Terver Anyor, cautioned religious leaders against political manipulations by politicians, especially before and during next year's general elections. He emphasized the need for religious leaders to promote peaceful and tolerant communities. The meeting also had the State Program Officer, Mr Habila Diko, who explained that participants were carefully selected to ensure the rights of every TLMN member.
The rights of every TLMN member to have and choose, change, practice, and share their religious beliefs without fear of force, coercion, or discrimination were emphasized during the meeting. The initiative seeks to promote freedom of religion and belief, allowing individuals to practice their faith without fear of persecution. This is crucial in building a tolerant and peaceful community.
The TLMN peace project is a significant initiative aimed at promoting peaceful coexistence in Niger communities. With 500,000 Christians and Muslims expected to participate, the project has the potential to make a substantial impact. By fostering unity and tolerance, the initiative can help to reduce conflicts and promote a more harmonious environment for residents.
The project's success will depend on the active participation of community members, religious leaders, and stakeholders. The TLMN team emphasized the need for collaboration and commitment to achieving the project's objectives. By working together, the communities can create a more peaceful and tolerant environment, where individuals can practice their faith without fear of persecution.
