The 14th congress of the Friends and Alumni of the Kinshasa University Medical Faculty (AFMED) is scheduled to take place from November 9-13 in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo. The event will feature plenary sessions at the University of Kinshasa (Unikin) from November 9-12, followed by a closing ceremony at the Sultani River hotel on November 13. The congress will focus on urgent medical and surgical care, pre-hospital and intra-hospital care in the era of Universal Health Coverage (CSU).

The congress theme, "Urgences médico-chirurgicales, prise en charge préhospitalière et intra-hospitalière à l’ère de la Couverture santé universelle (CSU)," reflects the current state of the Congolese healthcare system, which has implemented CSU. The event will discuss the modalities of care for vital emergencies, including pre-hospital care by "Etoile bleue" and hospital care. Dr. Daniel Tonduangu, president of AFMED, emphasized that the congress is open to everyone, with a focus on ethics and deontology for healthcare professionals.

The congress will feature workshops and scientific exchanges, including a session on wound care and cicatrization at the IME hospital in Kimpese on November 16-17. The event is supported by the NGO "KONGOTUTELEMA" and the expertise of the Congolese Society of Wounds and Cicatrization. Dr. Tonduangu highlighted that this 14th edition marks the anchoring of AFMED in the Congolese scientific landscape.

The congress will also serve as a platform for learned societies in the Democratic Republic of Congo, with the participation of several societies, including the Congolese Society of Digestive and General Surgery (SOCOCHID) and the Congolese Society of Stomatology, Maxillofacial Surgery, and Oral Surgery (SCOS CMF and CO). The event aims to bring together healthcare professionals, teachers, and students to discuss current issues in the field.

The previous congress, the 13th International Congress of AFMED, took place from November 3-6, 2025, in Kinshasa, with a focus on "Medicine here and medicine elsewhere" and Universal Health Coverage. The event featured a scientific fair and a training session on emergency medicine for final-year students.

According to Dr. Tonduangu, the 14th congress is notable for taking place on the site of the alma mater, Unikin, with a focus on ethics and deontology for healthcare professionals. The event is expected to attract a large audience, including healthcare professionals, teachers, and students.

The 14th congress of AFMED will provide a valuable opportunity for healthcare professionals to share knowledge, discuss current issues, and network with colleagues. The event will also highlight the importance of universal health coverage and the role of healthcare professionals in achieving this goal.
