The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has officially confirmed the identities of all five people on board the helicopter that crashed at Kudenga Farm in Marondera, northeastern Zimbabwe on September 30. The victims were identified as prominent businessman Wicknell Munodaani Chivayo, his wife Lucy Rujeko Muteke, Saneliswe Magagula, pilot Calvin Tafirei Soda, and co-pilot Courage Mutavirwa.

Forensic scientists and aviation experts have attended the crash scene as police investigations into the cause get underway. The crash site was examined by experts, and investigators are now working to establish the precise circumstances that led to the fatal crash. The Zimbabwe Republic Police reports that findings would be shared progressively as the inquiry advances.

The helicopter, a Bell 430 aircraft, departed from Gandami Chikomba, where the couple had been overseeing construction of their rural mansion, at approximately 4:20 pm local time. The chopper was bound for Harare when it came down over Kudenga farm in Marondera roughly 40 minutes later, at around 5 pm. Authorities sealed off the site following the crash.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa issued a statement expressing shock at the deaths, disclosing that Chivayo had met with him just one day before the crash. Mnangagwa described Chivayo as a philanthropist whose charitable contributions ran into millions of dollars, spanning politics, religion, sport, and public service.

The president noted that Chivayo had shared ambitious plans for Zimbabwe with him following a Cabinet meeting on Tuesday. He also noted that the couple had been returning from Chikomba, where they were constructing both family and community structures, in line with government policy on rural development and investment.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police expressed its deepest condolences to the bereaved families. No further details regarding the cause of the crash or the condition of the wreckage have been released at this stage. The ZRP has indicated it will issue additional updates as the investigation progresses.

By midnight on Wednesday, the bodies of all five occupants remained at the scene, with wreckage spread across the farm. After the initial impact, the aircraft moved several metres from its point of contact with the ground. The bodies, described as badly charred, were not removed from the scene until Thursday.
