World Vision-Ghana (WVG), a non-government organisation, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with two Assemblies in the Ahafo Region to push for the attainment of Universal Service Coverage (USC) for Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH). The MoU was signed between Asunafo North Municipal and the Asutifi North District Assemblies. This initiative aims to accelerate Ghana's achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) six by 2030.
The United Nations global goal six enjoins countries to achieve the availability and sustainable management of clean water and sanitation for all. With just about four years to go, WVG has signed the MoU with 23 districts and municipalities across the country. According to WVG's Project Manager, Cephas Wedam, the MoU aims to achieve a 90 percent threshold of providing clean water for about 700,000 people spread across local communities.
The initiative includes providing clean water for 200 schools and 300 health facilities. Mr Wedam explained that the initiative is WVG's contribution towards achieving the SDGs goal six. He emphasized that the organisation is committed to ensuring that Ghanaians have access to clean water and sanitation.
The Ahafo Regional Coordinating Director, Joseph Frimpong Naayo, emphasised the commitment of the Ahafo Regional Coordinating Council to continue playing its monitoring role in ensuring the achievement of the objectives of the MoU. The council will work closely with the assemblies to monitor progress and ensure that the goals are met.
The MoU was signed by Robel Wamisho, the Acting National Director of WVG and the Associate Director for WASH, on behalf of WVG. The Asutifi North District Assembly was represented by Abdul Aziz Jafaaru, the District Coordinating Director, and Bismark Kyere Asante, the District Planning Officer. The Asunafo North Municipal Assembly was represented by Benjamin Owusu Afriyie, the Municipal Coordinating Director, and Agnes Banaazi, the Municipal Planning Officer.
