The Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, has stated that artificial intelligence cannot take over the role of professional teachers in Nigeria. He made this assertion on Monday during the 2026 World Teachers' Day commemoration, with the theme: "Protecting and Advancing the Status of the Teaching Profession in a Rapidly Changing World". Alausa emphasized that while technology and artificial intelligence are changing how knowledge is accessed and used, they cannot replace the judgment, encouragement, and human connection provided by skilled teachers.

According to Alausa, teachers perform one of the most consequential responsibilities in society, which is preparing the next generation. He noted that this is why President Bola Tinubu has shown extraordinary commitment to education and the Nigerian child through his educational reforms. The Minister expressed his gratitude and warm congratulations to all teachers across Nigeria, highlighting their crucial role in shaping the future of the nation.

Alausa stressed that the government's commitment to equipping teachers to use new tools responsibly and confidently while safeguarding the standards and values of their profession remains unwavering. He emphasized that teachers deserve professional respect, opportunities to develop throughout their careers, appropriate resources, fair recognition, and good working conditions that enable them to teach effectively.

The Minister highlighted that President Bola Tinubu's educational reforms aim to provide better learning environments, stronger institutions, skills for a changing economy, reliable data for decisions, and better teacher welfare and continued professional development. He noted that the President's Teachers' and Schools' Excellence Awards (PTSEA) recognize outstanding teachers, school administrators, and schools for their professionalism, innovation, and leadership.

Alausa encouraged award recipients to continue upholding the professionalism, integrity, innovation, and commitment that earned them recognition and to inspire others to pursue the same standards of excellence. He emphasized that the President's association with these awards sends a powerful message that teaching excellence deserves the highest national regard.

The Minister noted that the theme of this year's World Teachers' Day emphasizes the need to turn appreciation into lasting support for teachers. He highlighted that teachers serve in various settings, including cities and rural communities, public and private schools, and that they should have the tools and backing to help every learner progress.

On the sidelines of the event, the Minister presented awards to outstanding teachers, school administrators, and schools, acknowledging their contributions to the education sector. The President's commitment to education and the teaching profession reflects a conviction that a child's opportunities should not be limited by geography, family income, or circumstance.
