A helicopter crash in Zimbabwe has claimed the lives of six people, including prominent businessman Wicknell Chivayo and his wife Lucy Muteke. The incident occurred on Wednesday evening in the Marondera district, approximately 70 kilometers east of the capital city Harare. According to police spokesperson Paul Nyathi, the crash happened at around 11 pm local time.

The helicopter, which was traveling from Gandami in Chikomba, where Chivayo was building a house, crashed into a field in Kudenga after flying for about 40 minutes. The cause of the crash is currently unknown, and police have launched an investigation. Rescue teams were dispatched to the scene, but unfortunately, all on board were killed, including two pilots.

Wicknell Chivayo was a well-known figure in Zimbabwe, famous for his wealth and lavish lifestyle, which he often showcased on social media. He was also known for his connections with top African leaders and had several high-profile business ventures, including a $172 million solar power project in Gwanda, which had been embroiled in controversy and litigation for several years.

Chivayo was also under investigation for alleged irregularities in the procurement of electoral equipment for Zimbabwe's 2023 general elections. However, the anti-corruption agency responsible for the investigation dropped the case in 2025, citing lack of evidence. Chivayo was also known for his philanthropy, often donating expensive cars and large sums of money to celebrities, clergy, and other prominent individuals.

The news of Chivayo's death has sent shockwaves across the region, with tributes pouring in from friends and acquaintances. Kenyan President William Ruto, who described Chivayo as a friend, expressed his condolences to the families of the victims, saying he would remember Chivayo for his friendship, strength, and confidence in the African continent's potential.

Chivayo's business empire included several high-profile ventures, and his death has raised questions about the future of his projects. His legacy as a businessman and philanthropist will be remembered, but the circumstances surrounding the helicopter crash will require further investigation to determine the cause of the tragedy.

The incident has sparked an outpouring of condolences from across the region, with many expressing shock and sadness at the sudden loss of life. As the investigation into the crash continues, the families of the victims have been left to mourn the loss of their loved ones.
