The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has announced that its 2027 Investment Forum will take place in Lome, Togo, on April 7-8. The forum, organized by the ECOWAS Bank for Investment and Development (BIDC), aims to promote investment in the region and foster economic growth. This will be the second edition of the forum, following the successful event held in Lome in 2024, which brought together over 700 participants and 30 speakers from more than 20 countries.
The 2024 forum resulted in the signing of three memoranda of understanding representing a total financing of $439 million for projects in Guinea, Nigeria, and Senegal. These projects are currently being financed. The BIDC's announcement comes at a time when West Africa is experiencing a growth in GDP, with a 4.8% growth rate in 2025, up from 4.7% in 2024. The region has also seen a reduction in inflation and an increase in its current account surplus.
However, the ongoing conflict in the Middle East has altered the region's economic prospects. The rise in energy and fertilizer prices is putting pressure on consumer prices and foreign exchange reserves in several countries. In response to these challenges, the theme of the 2027 ECOWAS Investment Forum has been set as "Resilience and Transformation: Navigating Global Uncertainty and Unlocking Inclusive Growth in West Africa."
The BIDC's officials believe that resilience in the region can no longer rely solely on favorable commodity prices, as seen during the COVID-19 pandemic. Instead, they advocate for a structural transformation of economies, which can capture more value in production chains rather than just exporting raw materials. The 2027 forum will focus on three main pillars: structural transformation of economies, integration of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles, and optimization of the BIDC's operational efficiency.
The forum will also prioritize support for young people and women, particularly through entrepreneurship. This is part of the BIDC's efforts to ensure that no one is left behind in the region's economic growth. The event is expected to bring together stakeholders from across the region and beyond, providing a platform for discussions on investment opportunities and challenges in West Africa.
According to the BIDC, the 2027 ECOWAS Investment Forum will build on the success of the previous edition, which demonstrated the potential for investment and growth in the region. The forum's outcomes are expected to contribute to the development of a more resilient and inclusive economy in West Africa.
The ECOWAS Bank for Investment and Development (BIDC) plays a crucial role in promoting economic development in the region. With its focus on investment, infrastructure, and entrepreneurship, the BIDC is well-positioned to support the growth and transformation of West African economies.
