The Algerian National Meteorological Office (ONM) has issued a yellow alert for 28 provinces, warning of heavy rain and thunderstorms expected to hit various regions across the country on Sunday, October 4. The alert, which takes effect from midday, forecasts sustained rain and thunderstorms that will persist until midnight. The provinces affected include those in the north, east, high plateaus, and parts of the south.
According to the ONM bulletin, the rain and thunderstorms are expected to start at 12:00 PM and remain active until midnight, with significant accumulations possible in short periods. The list of affected provinces spans the country, including major cities such as Algiers, Tipaza, Blida, and Annaba. The high plateaus region, including provinces like Sétif, Batna, and Constantine, will also experience unstable weather.
The provinces of Tiaret, Saïda, Sidi Bel Abbès, and El Bayadh, as well as southern provinces like Illizi, In Salah, Tamanrasset, and Djanet, are also expected to be affected by the inclement weather. Motorists are advised to exercise caution, particularly on roads that can become slippery quickly, while residents in low-lying areas and near oueds should closely monitor the situation.
In addition to the Sunday alert, a second bulletin warns of a marked thunderstorm activity with a risk of storms for Monday, October 5, affecting eight provinces. These provinces include Tébessa, Oum El Bouaghi, Khenchela, Souk Ahras, Guelma, and Constantine in the east, as well as In Salah and Tamanrasset in the south.
This recent weather alert follows a trend of unstable weather in Algeria, with several provinces experiencing heavy precipitation and vigilance orange alerts in recent weeks. In mid-September, four special orange bulletins were issued for accumulations that could approach 50 mm in certain regions of the south and high plateaus.
The Protection Civil has also reported that its units responded to 25 fires across different provinces between October 3 and 4, affecting vegetation, agricultural crops, palm groves, and hay bales. Fortunately, all fires were extinguished, and no incidents were still active at the time of the report.
The ONM continues to update its bulletins, providing critical information on the validity periods and vigilance levels for weather alerts. Residents and travelers are advised to follow these updates and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety during this period of unstable weather.
