WaterAid Malawi has announced plans to expand its project aimed at improving water, sanitation, and hygiene (Wash) services in Ntchisi district. The organization's head of programme delivery, Lucy Jubeck Mungoni, made the statement during a training session for Ntchisi District Council and health officials in Mponela, Dowa. The training focused on sustaining Wash services provided by WaterAid in the district. Mungoni emphasized the importance of collaboration with the council to achieve the district's Strategic Investment Plan.

Mungoni appealed to participants to work with communities in safeguarding Wash infrastructure constructed in various communities. She stressed the need for collective effort to ensure the long-term impact of WaterAid's projects. The organization is working closely with the Ntchisi District Council to ensure that Wash services are sustained beyond the project's lifespan. This approach aims to promote community ownership and management of Wash facilities.

Ntchisi District Council director of health and sanitation services, Alexander Chijuwa, expressed gratitude to WaterAid for complementing government efforts to improve Wash services. He noted that prior to WaterAid's intervention, most health facilities in the district faced significant Wash challenges. Chijuwa acknowledged the positive impact of WaterAid's presence in the district, citing improvements in water, sanitation, and hygiene services.

Ntchisi District Council chairperson, Maloto Chimkombero, described the training as crucial, as it provided a platform to discuss issues affecting communities in the district. He emphasized the importance of behavior change and community engagement in sustaining Wash services. Chimkombero assured that council members would work with their respective communities to promote the project's objectives and ensure its long-term success.

WaterAid Malawi is implementing the 150 Healthcare Challenge Project in Ntchisi district, focusing on 13 health centers. The project involves installing water and hygiene facilities, as well as behavior change interventions. The project's impact is expected to be significant, given the critical role of Wash services in preventing the spread of diseases. By improving access to clean water, sanitation, and hygiene facilities, WaterAid aims to contribute to better health outcomes in Ntchisi district. The organization's efforts align with the district's Strategic Investment Plan, which prioritizes Wash services as a key area of focus.
