A 36-hour disruption in water distribution will affect several regions in Tunisia starting October 6, 2026, at 1:00 AM. According to a statement by the Tunisian Water Distribution Company (Société Nationale d'Exploitation et de Distribution des Eaux, or SONED), the affected areas include parts of the governorates of Tunis and Ariana. Residents are advised to take necessary precautions and store essential water supplies during this period.

The regions to be affected by the water supply disruption include the delegations of El Marsa, El Karm, and Carthage. Specifically, areas such as Bouselsela, Borj El Hawki, and Sidi Daoud in El Marsa, and El Karm El Arabi, Jardins de Carthage, and Ain Zaouane Nord and Sud in El Karm, will experience water shortages. Additionally, parts of Carthage, such as Mohamed Ali and Birsessa, and areas in the green zone, including El Bahira 1 and 2, will also be impacted.

The water supply disruption is necessary for the completion of a flood protection project in the El Marsa region. The project involves covering a 1,000 mm diameter main water distribution pipe that intersects with the project site. SONED stated that the pipe needs to be diverted to allow for the continuation of the project. The work will be carried out 24/7, and the company has mobilized its technical teams to complete the task as quickly as possible.

SONED has assured that it will make every effort to restore water supplies to normal levels as soon as possible. The company has scheduled the work to be completed by October 7, 2026, at 1:00 PM, after which water distribution will be gradually restored. In the meantime, residents are advised to store water for essential needs.

To mitigate the impact of the water supply disruption, SONED will deploy five tanker trucks with a capacity of 10 cubic meters each to provide water to sensitive institutions such as schools, hospitals, and healthcare facilities. This measure aims to ensure that these essential services continue to operate smoothly during the disruption.

The Tunisian Water Distribution Company has urged citizens and institutions to take necessary precautions and store essential water supplies during the 36-hour disruption. The company is committed to completing the maintenance work as quickly as possible and restoring water supplies to normal levels.

The water supply disruption is a necessary measure to ensure the long-term reliability of the water distribution system in Tunisia. SONED's efforts to maintain and upgrade the water infrastructure aim to provide a stable and secure water supply to residents and institutions across the country.
