The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has announced the appointment of Dr. Amos Josiah Dangut as its new Registrar and Chief Executive Officer. Dangut, a Nigerian, will serve a five-year term starting from October 2026 to September 2031. He takes over from Alhaji Pateh Bah from The Gambia. The appointment was confirmed during WAEC's 74th Annual Meeting held in Accra, Ghana, in March 2026.
Dr. Dangut has a rich educational background, having earned a Bachelor of Agriculture in Animal Production in 1991, a Master of Science in Animal Science in 1994, a Doctor of Philosophy in Animal Science in 2017, and a Master of Education in Administration and Planning in 2020. Born on October 2, 1967, Dangut began his education career in 1994 at St. Louis College in Jos as a WAEC examiner before joining the Council in 1998.
With over twenty years of experience in the education sector, Dangut has held various roles within WAEC, including Assistant Registrar for the Test Development Division in Ogba, Lagos; Head of Examinations Security; Deputy Branch Controller for Uyo and Bauchi; Branch Controller for Yola; Controller for the Post-Examinations Department; Zonal Coordinator for Ikeja; and Deputy Registrar heading the National Office.
As the Head of the Nigeria National Office from October 2023 until September 2026, Dangut led significant innovations, including the launch of Computer-Based WASSCE, the serialization of question papers, and the introduction of a Digital Electronic Marking System. He also managed the Digital Certificate Portal, the WAEC E-Study Platform, and the Digital Records Archive.
Throughout his career, Dangut has received recognition for his contributions, including praise from the Nigeria Examinations Committee for his management of examination issues from 2000 to 2006. He also earned an Award for Meritorious Service from the Ondo State Government during his NYSC year.
Dangut has been part of several boards, including the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC), Joint Universities Preliminary Examinations Board (JUPEB), Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), and Grange Educational Foundation. He has represented WAEC at both the Joint Consultative Committee on Education and the National Council on Education.
Dr. Dangut officially started as the 14th Registrar of WAEC on October 1, 2026, and is currently the Regional Representative for West Africa on the Executive Board of the Association for Educational Assessment in Africa (AEAA). He is a Fellow of the Science Teachers Association of Nigeria (STAN) and a member of the Nigeria Institute of Management (NIM).
