The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has announced the appointment of Dr. Amos Josiah Dangut as its new Registrar and Chief Executive Officer. He assumed office on October 1, 2026, and is the 14th Registrar of the examination body. His five-year term will run until September 2031. Dangut succeeds Alhaji Pateh Bah of The Gambia.

Dr. Dangut was appointed by WAEC's international governing board, which ratified his appointment at its 74th Annual Meeting in Accra, Ghana, in March 2026. Before his new role, Dangut served as Head of WAEC's Nigeria National Office from October 2023 to September 2026. The Council announced the appointment in a statement by Demianus G. Ojijeogu, Head of Public Affairs at WAEC Headquarters in Accra.

Dr. Dangut has over two decades of experience in examination administration and test development. He started his education career at St. Louis College, Jos, in 1994, and joined WAEC in 1998 as an examiner. His career at the Council has included several senior positions, such as Assistant Registrar in the Test Development Division, Head of Examinations Security, and Deputy Branch Controller in Uyo and Bauchi.

As Head of the Nigeria National Office, Dangut supervised several digital initiatives, including Computer-Based WASSCE, serialization of examination question papers, Digital Electronic Marking System, Digital Certificate Portal, and WAEC E-Study Platform. He also oversaw the Digital Records Archive and digital systems for examination logistics and examiner monitoring.

Dr. Dangut holds degrees in Animal Production, Animal Science, and Education Administration and Planning. His academic qualifications include a Bachelor of Agriculture, two master's degrees, and a PhD in Animal Science. He has served on the boards of NERDC, JUPEB, JAMB, and Grange Educational Foundation, and has represented WAEC at the Joint Consultative Committee on Education and the National Council on Education.

Beyond his administrative roles, Dangut has published articles in national and international journals and presented papers at several conferences. He currently represents the West African sub-region on the Executive Board of the Association for Educational Assessment in Africa (AEAA). Professionally, he is a Fellow of the Science Teachers Association of Nigeria (STAN) and a member of the Nigeria Institute of Management (NIM).

The Nigeria Examinations Committee commended Dangut for his handling of examination matters between 2000 and 2006. During his NYSC year, he also received an Award for Meritorious Service from the Ondo State Government. With his extensive experience and achievements, Dr. Dangut is expected to bring significant leadership to WAEC as its new Registrar and CEO.
