Vodacom, a leading communication company in Tanzania, has stated that the use of artificial intelligence (AI) technology is intended to enhance customer service efficiency, not replace workers. According to Harriet Lwakatare, Customer Service Director at Vodacom, the integration of AI technology will help simplify repetitive tasks, allowing employees to focus on more complex issues that require human attention and empathy.
Lwakatare made these remarks during a recent event celebrating Customer Service Week, where Vodacom recognized the contributions of its customer service employees. She emphasized that despite advancements in technology, including AI, automation, and robotics, human judgment and understanding are still essential in addressing customer needs and resolving complex issues.
The use of technology, Lwakatare said, should enable workers to provide better services in a shorter amount of time, rather than eliminating their jobs. She highlighted the importance of recognizing the contributions of customer service employees, who interact with customers through various channels, including call centers, stores, and back-office units.
Vanessa Mlawi, Retail Store Manager at Vodacom, echoed Lwakatare's sentiments, emphasizing that customer service employees are a vital link between the company and its customers. Mlawi noted that while technology has improved performance, it has not diminished the importance of direct communication between employees and customers.
During the Customer Service Week celebrations, Vodacom also engaged in corporate social responsibility activities, including a blood drive and a visit to a school for students with special needs. These initiatives aimed to strengthen the company's relationship with the community.
A Vodacom customer, Padili James, expressed his satisfaction with the company's services, having used their network for nearly 17 years. James praised Vodacom's internet services, which have facilitated his content creation and business activities, and particularly appreciated the home internet service, which offers various packages for families and neighbors.
The event concluded with a call to recognize the value of customer service employees in driving Vodacom's performance, growth, and success. By leveraging technology and empowering its workforce, Vodacom aims to continue delivering high-quality services to its customers.
