The Vietnamese Government has expressed its commitment to strengthening its relationship with Nigeria in various sectors. This pledge was made by Mr. Le Hoang, Vietnam's Ambassador to Nigeria, during a reception in Abuja to commemorate Vietnam's 81st National Day and the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Nigeria and Vietnam. The Ambassador highlighted the significance of this milestone in the relationship between both countries.
Nigeria and Vietnam established diplomatic relations on May 25, 1976, and have since sustained economic and diplomatic engagement despite their geographical distance. The Ambassador noted that the 50th anniversary provides an opportunity for both sides to reflect on their longstanding partnership and identify new areas of cooperation. He emphasized that Nigeria is an important economic partner in Africa, and Vietnam sees it as a gateway to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) market.
The Ambassador identified four major areas where both countries can expand cooperation: agriculture and food security, digital transformation and telecommunications, trade and investment, and people-to-people and cultural exchanges. In agriculture, Vietnam can share its experience in high-tech agriculture, rice production, aquaculture, agro-processing, and agricultural value chains. This cooperation aims to enhance food security and agricultural productivity in both countries.
In the area of digital transformation and telecommunications, Vietnam and Nigeria can cooperate in telecommunications infrastructure, innovation, e-commerce, and financial technology. The Ambassador invited Nigerian businesses to explore opportunities in Vietnam and expressed Vietnam's readiness to facilitate greater interest by Vietnamese companies in the Nigerian market. This cooperation can promote economic growth and development in both countries.
The Ambassador also emphasized the importance of people-to-people and cultural exchanges, particularly in education, tourism, sports, and the arts. He believes that stronger interaction between Nigerians and Vietnamese will promote mutual understanding and provide a broader foundation for bilateral relations. This can be achieved through educational exchanges, cultural events, and tourism initiatives.
Amb. Wakil Babagana, Chief of Party to the Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, congratulated Vietnam on its anniversary and underscored the achievements of both countries over the years as a milestone for Vietnam. He reaffirmed Nigeria's willingness to broaden its relationship with Vietnam beyond diplomatic ties to stronger economic, technological, agricultural, and cultural partnerships. This commitment demonstrates Nigeria's interest in deepening its relationship with Vietnam.
The event, attended by diplomats, government officials, and members of the Vietnamese community in Nigeria, marks a significant step in strengthening Nigeria-Vietnam relations.
