The United States has announced plans to enhance cooperation with Madagascar in maritime security. A high-level delegation from the US Africa Command (USAFRICOM) recently visited the island nation to discuss priorities, including maritime domain awareness, combating illicit trafficking and piracy, and regional training opportunities. The talks also touched on the connection between critical minerals, economic security, and national defense.

Madagascar's strategic location at the crossroads of Indian Ocean shipping lanes makes it a critical partner in regional security efforts. The country faces multiple threats, including human trafficking, drug and arms trafficking, piracy, and illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing. The US aims to support Madagascar in addressing these challenges through enhanced surveillance and security of its territorial waters.

The US delegation, led by Lieutenant General John Brennan, Deputy Commander of USAFRICOM, met with Malagasy President Michael Randrianirina, Defense Minister General Ely Razafitombo, and senior military officials. The discussions focused on strengthening bilateral cooperation in maritime security and exploring opportunities for joint exercises and training.

As part of the visit, the US delegation also traveled to Antsiranana to prepare for Madagascar's participation in the 2027 "Cutlass Express" exercise, a multinational event aimed at improving maritime domain awareness and security operations. The exercise will help Madagascar integrate with regional partners and enhance its maritime security capabilities.

Lieutenant General Brennan emphasized the US commitment to strengthening partnerships with African countries to address emerging security and economic opportunities on the continent. The US is not the only country seeking to enhance maritime security cooperation with Madagascar, with Russia and France also expressing interest in strengthening ties.

The visit comes as Madagascar seeks to bolster its maritime security in the face of growing threats. The country's strategic location and rich natural resources make it an important partner in regional security efforts. The US and Madagascar have a long-standing relationship, with the US providing significant support to the country's security and development initiatives.

The enhanced cooperation between the US and Madagascar is expected to contribute to regional stability and security. The two countries will continue to work together to address shared security challenges and promote economic development.
