The US Embassy in Ghana has encouraged Ghanaians seeking higher education opportunities abroad to consider the United States as a top destination. According to Chargé d’Affaires of the US Embassy in Ghana, Rolf Olson, US universities offer a wide range of educational opportunities that equip students with the knowledge, skills, and experience needed to contribute meaningfully to national development. This was stated at the opening of the EducationUSA Fair in Accra, which brought together over 30 US colleges and universities.
The EducationUSA Fair, organized by the US Embassy in Ghana in partnership with EducationUSA, provided a platform for prospective applicants to receive guidance on admission processes across hundreds of accredited US institutions. Thousands of participants at the two-day fair in Accra and Kumasi received information on tuition, scholarships, student visas, and other study opportunities in the US. EducationUSA is the only official US government-sponsored network in 170 countries, providing comprehensive, accurate, and impartial information on US higher education.
Currently, Ghana ranks second in Sub-Saharan Africa and 14th in the world as a source of international students studying in the US. Chargé d’Affaires Olson noted that American universities compete globally for talented students, making the US a welcoming option for higher learning. He encouraged Ghanaians to see the US as a prime destination for acquiring new skills that can strengthen US-Ghana partnership.
Mr. Olson, a beneficiary of a college fair, urged students and families to take full advantage of the fair to ask questions, gather information, and start conversations that could shape their future. He shared his personal experience of choosing a US university through a college fair, which helped him decide on his field of study and navigate the application process.
The US Embassy in Ghana prioritizes the adjudication of student visa applications, as reflected in the significant increase in Ghanaian students studying in the US. The number of Ghanaian students in the US more than tripled in a six-year period, from approximately 4,000 in the 2020 academic year to 12,800 in the 2024-25 school year.
Chargé d’Affaires Olson emphasized that the US Embassy strives to adjudicate as many student visa applications as possible with available resources. He encouraged students to apply for visas as soon as they are able, in the context of the college application process. This approach aims to facilitate a smooth and efficient application process for Ghanaian students.
