The Bank of Ghana has hosted students from the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) and the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) as part of its Monetary Policy Committee Educational Observership Programme. This initiative aims to promote transparency and deepen public understanding of monetary policy processes and decision-making. The programme ran concurrently with the Central Bank's 132nd Monetary Policy Committee meeting held on September 23 and 24, 2026.
The selected students, primarily final-year economics and related students, observed the proceedings, engaged with policymakers, and gained insight into the data and deliberations that shape interest rate decisions. This programme follows a similar engagement with students from the University of Ghana in a previous cohort. The Bank of Ghana introduced the Educational Observership Programme in July 2026 to bridge the gap between the central bank and the academic community.
Students who participated in the programme expressed their delight and privilege in being part of the initiative. They expect to gain knowledge that will help demystify the policy process and explore ways the youth can contribute to Ghana's economic management in the future. Nana Baffoe, a final-year Economics student at UPSA, noted that she is eager to learn about the monetary policy decision-making process and study how it is done transparently.
The programme provides students with practical exposure to the analytical work, technical discussions, and communication processes that underpin the Committee's decisions. Dr. Johnson Pandit Asiama emphasized that engaging students is part of the Bank's broader commitment to transparency, public engagement, and policy credibility. The initiative aims to demystify monetary policy and inspire future Ghanaian leaders.
Students also suggested that the Bank of Ghana should broaden youth involvement in monetary policy discourse, proposing outreach beyond the Bank Square campus to other institutions. This would enable more young people to gain practical understanding and contribute to Ghana's economic management.
The Educational Observership Programme is part of the Bank of Ghana's efforts to build a pipeline of young Ghanaians with practical understanding of macroeconomic management. By engaging students, the Bank aims to provide them with hands-on experience and knowledge that will help shape their future careers.
The programme has been well-received by the students, who appreciate the opportunity to learn from policymakers and gain insight into the monetary policy process. The Bank of Ghana's initiative is expected to contribute to a better understanding of monetary policy and its impact on the economy.
