Upper East Regional Minister, Akamugri Atanga Danatus, has intensified efforts to attract strategic investment into the Upper East Region as part of his vision to develop an integrated agro-industrial and irrigation corridor in Northern Ghana. The Minister engaged several Chinese companies and government representatives to explore opportunities for collaboration, technology transfer, industrial development, renewable energy, modern agriculture, poultry production and processing, water management, and industrial park development. This investment mission to China was organized by the Regional Coordinating Council under the PEARL Framework.
During the visit, the Regional Minister met with Ghana's Ambassador to China, Hon. Kojo Bonsu, to brief him on the purpose and progress of the delegation's visit from 13th to 20th September 2026. The Minister outlined the Region's investment potential and his objective of using strategic partnerships with Chinese investors to transform the Upper East Region into a major agro-industrial and manufacturing hub in Northern Ghana. The briefing provided an opportunity for the Minister to discuss the various companies and institutions engaged during the mission and the potential areas in which their investments could be established in the Upper East Region.
The delegation visited and engaged several companies operating in different sectors of the Chinese economy. One of the companies visited was Dongfang Electronics, involved in solar and renewable energy technologies. Discussions focused on the potential establishment of a similar production or assembly facility in the Upper East Region. The Minister highlighted the Region's growing demand for reliable and sustainable energy and the potential for renewable energy to support agriculture, irrigation, agro-processing, and industrial development.
The delegation also engaged Jinghua Company Co. Limited, which specializes in the manufacture of water meters. Discussions centered on modern water management technologies and their possible application in Ghana, particularly in supporting irrigation development, efficient water distribution, and sustainable management of water resources. The Minister emphasized that efficient water management will be critical to the success of the proposed integrated agro-industrial and irrigation corridor in the Upper East Region.
The Minister further visited Ruihe Trade Company Limited, involved in poultry feed, poultry production, and poultry processing. The engagement explored opportunities for collaboration in developing the poultry value chain in the Upper East Region, including feed production, modern poultry farming, processing, and value addition. The Minister stressed the importance of establishing integrated agricultural value chains that can create jobs for young people, improve food security, and reduce dependence on imported poultry products.
In addition to engagements with private-sector companies, the Minister also met representatives of the Chinese Government, including officials connected to the Ministry of Commerce, to discuss areas of cooperation and investment. The engagement provided an opportunity to introduce the Upper East Region's investment opportunities to Chinese government representatives and explore how institutional cooperation can support partnerships between Chinese businesses and the Region.
The Minister used the various engagements to call for stronger cooperation between Ghana and China, particularly in areas that can directly contribute to economic transformation in the Upper East Region. He emphasized that the Region is not only seeking investment capital but also technology, skills development, modern production systems, irrigation expertise, manufacturing capacity, and long-term partnerships. The proposed Upper East Integrated Agro-Industrial and Irrigation Corridor is therefore envisaged as a major platform for transforming the Region's agricultural potential into sustainable economic opportunities.
