UpEnergy, a company experiencing exciting growth and expansion into new geographies and product categories, has posted a job advertisement for a Product Engineer. The successful candidate will be based at UpEnergy's Global Innovation Hub in Kampala, Uganda. The role involves providing hands-on technical execution and product ownership to move products from requirements and early concepts through prototyping, validation, product readiness, deployment, and lifecycle improvement.
The Product Engineer will be responsible for supporting the design and development of new products, product improvements, and engineering solutions across the product portfolio. This includes creating, reviewing, and maintaining CAD models, engineering drawings, specifications, tolerances, BOM-related technical requirements, and engineering changes. The engineer will also develop and build prototypes, coordinate rapid engineering iterations, and conduct technical design reviews.
The ideal candidate for the Product Engineer position will have a Bachelor's degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Electrical/Electronic, Industrial, Manufacturing Engineering, Product Design Engineering, or a closely related technical field. Equivalent technical qualifications may be considered where supported by strong hands-on product-development experience. The engineer should have at least 5 years of relevant engineering experience in product development, product engineering, mechanical/electromechanical design, manufacturing engineering, or a closely related role.
The Product Engineer's responsibilities will also include conducting detailed technical evaluations of new products and technologies, researching materials, technologies, manufacturing processes, and design approaches that can improve performance, reliability, COGS, manufacturability, or deployment readiness. The engineer will coordinate mechanical, electrical, and system-level integration with relevant Engineering team members and collaborate with manufacturing and OEM partners during early-stage prototype development and design iteration.
In terms of product validation and readiness, the Product Engineer will develop and execute structured product-validation plans against defined technical and product requirements. This includes coordinating laboratory and field testing of new products and product improvements with country Operations teams, analyzing test results, identifying technical risks and failure modes, and developing corrective engineering solutions.
The Product Engineer will also be responsible for translating validated product intent into requirements that can be consistently evaluated during production and deployment. This includes supporting the onboarding and continuous improvement of global product-quality protocols in collaboration with QA and country teams, conducting structured root-cause analysis, and supporting corrective engineering and CAPA activities.
The successful candidate will be able to analyze product usage, performance, reliability, and failure data to generate engineering insights and inform product-development priorities. The engineer will work with relevant DMRV/data functions to translate available product usage data into actionable technical insights and coordinate periodic product-quality, field-test, and minimum-investment-pilot reporting.
