The United Nations Police (UNPOL) component has donated Ebola prevention and protection equipment to several units of the Congolese National Police (PNC) in Bunia, Ituri province. The handover took place on October 29. The equipment aims to reduce the risk of Ebola transmission among police officers and communities. The donation includes various items to enhance infection control measures.
The donated equipment is intended for several PNC units, including the provincial commissariat, police school, urban commissariat, Mobile Intervention Group (GMI), and the anti-crime and narcotics squadron. The items include chlorine powder, medical gloves, non-contact thermometers, masks, liquid soap, disinfectants, and hydroalcoholic gels. Additionally, handwashing devices with 100-liter capacity, supports, awareness stickers, identification materials, and trash bags were provided.
The equipment is expected to strengthen Ebola prevention measures within the beneficiary police units. This move is crucial in preventing the spread of the virus among police officers who are at risk of exposure while carrying out their duties. By protecting the police, they can effectively maintain security and ensure the well-being of the population.
The provincial police commissioner of Ituri, General Ngoy Sengelwa, highlighted the importance of protecting police officers. He emphasized that with this assistance, the police can focus on their security missions without worrying about their own safety. He urged the commanders of the beneficiary units to use the equipment effectively.
The Ebola outbreak has been a significant concern in the region, with reported cases and deaths in nearby areas. The situation in Bankoko, Bunia, and other locations has raised fears of a potential resurgence of the virus. The donation by UNPOL is a timely intervention to support the Congolese police in their efforts to prevent the spread of Ebola.
The prevention measures against Ebola are critical, especially in areas with high risks of transmission. The Congolese authorities have been working to enhance infection control measures, and the UNPOL donation is a valuable contribution to these efforts. The equipment will help to ensure that police officers are better equipped to handle the challenges posed by the Ebola outbreak.
The collaboration between UNPOL and the Congolese police is essential in maintaining security and preventing the spread of diseases like Ebola. The donation is a testament to the ongoing support of the international community in addressing the health and security challenges faced by the Democratic Republic of Congo.
