University Librarians Ghana (ULG) recently recognised the contributions of four former executives who played a crucial role in shaping the organisation. Dr Hawa Osman, Dr Mac Anthony Cobblah, Dr Theresa L. Adu, and Dr Gloria Bosomtwi Amoah were honoured for their distinguished service during the 42nd Annual General Meeting and Conference of ULG, held in Kumasi from 30 September to 1 October 2026. The conference, hosted by the University of Skills Training and Entrepreneurial Development (USTED), brought together university librarians, researchers, and higher-education leaders from across Ghana.
The four former executives were recognised for their leadership and contributions to ULG. Dr Hawa Osman served as Secretary for two terms between 2018 and 2023 and was credited with providing steadfast support for the organisation's leadership. Her organisational skills ensured the Secretariat continued to function effectively. Dr Mac Anthony Cobblah, University Librarian of the University of Cape Coast, served as Chairman of ULG from 2023 to 2025 and was recognised for leading the organisation during a period of significant change.
Dr Theresa L. Adu, University Librarian of the University of Health and Allied Sciences, was honoured for her role in reviving the association during a difficult period. She served as Chairperson from 2021 to 2023 and helped to expand and strengthen the professional body by opening ULG membership to technical universities. Dr Gloria Bosomtwi Amoah, who served as Secretary from 2023 to 2026, was praised for her dedication to the Secretariat and her role in ensuring that records and information were available during a period of transition.
The citations for the four former executives were signed by the current Chairman of ULG, Dr Christopher M. Owusu-Ansah, who is also University Librarian of USTED. In his message to the former executives, Dr Owusu-Ansah expressed gratitude on behalf of the membership, saying the association was "a better body because of your leadership and your selfless service." The recognition reflects the significant impact of their contributions to the organisation.
The conference, themed "Leading the Change: Developing Resilient Library Leaders for a Transforming Academic Landscape," focused on open access, research communication, and widening public access to knowledge. The discussions highlighted the changing role of university libraries, which are now expected to do more than provide access to books and journals. As universities expand their research output and digital resources become increasingly important, librarians must consider how knowledge produced within academic institutions can reach researchers, students, and the wider public.
The changing landscape of higher education and research requires university librarians to adapt and develop new skills. The conference provided a platform for librarians, researchers, and higher-education leaders to discuss the challenges and opportunities arising from these changes. The recognition of the four former executives serves as a reminder of the importance of leadership and service in shaping the future of university librarianship in Ghana.
The 42nd Annual General Meeting and Conference of ULG demonstrated the organisation's commitment to developing resilient library leaders and promoting collaboration and innovation in the sector. The event provided a valuable opportunity for networking, knowledge-sharing, and professional development among university librarians and higher-education leaders in Ghana.
