The University of Ibadan has emphasized the importance of ethical conduct, accountability, competence, and resilience in student leadership. Prof. Adebayo Oluwole, Director of the Career Development and Counselling Centre, made this call at a training programme for student union leaders. The programme aimed to equip student leaders with the skills and knowledge required for effective leadership. Oluwole stressed that leadership goes beyond occupying a position, and that character, competence, and credibility are essential for influencing others.

The training programme, themed 'Ethical and Responsible Student Leadership: Building Competence, Resilience and Positive Impact', featured various sessions on responsible governance, collaboration, conflict management, and people skills. Oluwole noted that student leaders play a crucial role in representing their colleagues, articulating their concerns, and contributing to the development of the university community. The quality of student leadership can significantly impact student life, campus relationships, and the university's reputation.

One of the sessions, 'Drug Abuse and Addiction: Early Signs of Abuse, Consequences and the Way Out', was delivered by Mercy Godwin, representing the Commander, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, Oyo State Command. This session was particularly relevant, as student leaders are expected to serve as role models and positive influences among their peers. The programme also featured sessions on ethical leadership, accountability, and stewardship in student governance, as well as leadership service through collaboration and teamwork.

The Deputy Bursar (Grants), University of Ibadan, Mr. Olagoke Akanwo, handled the session on 'Ethical Leadership, Accountability and Stewardship in Student Governance'. Dr. Adebunmi Oyekola, Director of the Youth Friendly Centre, facilitated the session on 'Leadership Service through Collaboration and Teamwork among Students'. Oyekola emphasized the importance of teamwork, noting that no leader can succeed alone.

Another session, 'Understanding Personality Types for Effective Conflict Management', was delivered by Dr. Adeleye of the Department of Counselling and Human Development Studies. This session highlighted the importance of understanding personality differences in effective conflict management. Oluwole noted that student leaders interact with individuals with different temperaments, expectations, communication styles, and approaches to disagreements.

The final session, 'People Skills for Student Leaders: Empathy, Altruism and Positive Campus Relationships', was facilitated by Dr Ola John Oluremi of Micomglobe Limited, Lagos. This session reinforced the importance of empathy and positive relationships in leadership. Oluwole stated that leadership is ultimately about people and that the CDCC remains committed to supporting the development of students with the knowledge, skills, and values required for responsible leadership.
