A devastating lightning strike in Kamira Village, Namagera Town Council, Jinja District, Uganda, has claimed the lives of two sugarcane workers and left three others critically injured. The incident occurred when the five men, who had been offloading sugarcane at a weighbridge, sought shelter under a nearby jackfruit tree as a drizzle began. The decision to gather under the tree proved fatal when lightning hit the spot directly.

The victims, identified as Hassan Mubiru and Ashraf, both residents of Wansimba-Nakabalale Village in Butagaya Sub-county, died instantly. The three survivors were rushed to Kagoma Hospital for urgent medical care. Kamira Village LC1 Chairman Shaban Lunkude confirmed the tragedy, stating that the victims had left their truck to seek shelter under the jackfruit tree, where the lightning struck, killing two and injuring three others.

Jinja District LC5 Chairman Moses Batwala expressed grief over the loss of life and urged residents to change their behavior during rainstorms. He appealed to residents to avoid taking shelter under trees, especially as the rainy season progresses. Batwala confirmed that he had personally directed the district ambulance driver to transport the injured to Kagoma Hospital and pledged to meet all medical costs for the three survivors.

In addition to providing medical assistance, Batwala plans to push district councillors to pass a resolution requiring all schools in the area to install lightning arresters. This move aims to prevent similar tragedies during the ongoing rainy season. Safety experts consistently advise people to remain inside vehicles or solid structures and to avoid open fields, tall trees, and bodies of water during thunderstorms.

Lightning strikes under large trees are particularly dangerous because trees act as natural conductors, drawing current downward and through anything nearby on the ground. This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of taking necessary precautions during thunderstorms. The community is in shock, and the incident has raised concerns about the safety of residents during the rainy season.

The incident has also sparked discussions about the need for increased awareness and education on lightning safety. Residents are being urged to be cautious and take necessary precautions to avoid similar tragedies in the future. The local authorities are working to provide support to the affected families and to implement measures to prevent such incidents from occurring.

The Uganda Meteorological Authority has warned of increased lightning activity during the rainy season, emphasizing the need for residents to be vigilant and take necessary precautions. The authority has advised residents to stay informed about weather conditions and to seek shelter in safe locations during thunderstorms.
