Nigerian football administrator Samson Adamu has been appointed General Secretary of the Confederation of African Football (CAF). The appointment was announced by CAF in a statement on its website on Sunday, following a comprehensive recruitment process. Adamu had been acting General Secretary since March, after Veron Mosengo-Omba resigned to become president of the football federation in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Adamu has spent eight years at CAF, first as Director of Competitions and later as Director of Tournaments and Events. He joined CAF in 2018 as Director of Competitions before subsequently serving as Director of Tournaments and Events. In his new role, he is expected to oversee CAF's day-to-day administration and support the implementation of its strategic priorities.
CAF President Patrice Motsepe said the appointment followed a competitive exercise in which the position was widely advertised and several candidates were interviewed. Motsepe praised Adamu's extensive experience in African football administration, highlighting his role in delivering several major continental competitions, including CAF's flagship tournament, the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations.
Adamu is a graduate of the FIFA Master programme in International Management, Law and Humanities of Sport, bringing considerable institutional knowledge to the role. His appointment places him in a line of CAF General Secretaries that includes members of Egypt's Fahmy family, who have held the post for over four decades.
Adamu's background in football administration is impressive, having played a leading role in the delivery of several major continental competitions. He is the son of Amos Adamu, a former Director of Sports in the then Ministry of Sports and a former FIFA Executive Committee member. This family connection to football administration is notable.
The appointment of Adamu as General Secretary of CAF is a significant development in African football. As the son of a former FIFA Executive Committee member, Adamu's appointment may bring new perspectives to the role. His experience in football administration and his institutional knowledge of CAF will likely be valuable assets in his new position.
Adamu's new role will involve overseeing the day-to-day administration of CAF and supporting the implementation of its strategic priorities. With his experience and knowledge, he is well-equipped to handle the challenges of the position and make a positive impact on African football.
