Researchers at Uganda Christian University (UCU) in Mukono are urging the government to increase funding for research, citing financial constraints and rising operational costs that have impacted several projects. The inadequate funding has hindered universities and research institutions from purchasing equipment, conducting fieldwork, and completing projects within their planned budgets. This has resulted in significant challenges for researchers, affecting the quality and scope of their work.

According to Prof. Elizabeth Balyejusa Kizito, Head of the Research Institute at UCU, greater government support would enable researchers to undertake more studies and contribute to addressing challenges facing the country. She emphasized that funding shortages have disrupted several research activities, and urged the government to extend financial support to researchers in private universities and non-governmental institutions. This would help to promote research and innovation across the country.

Prof. Kizito also raised concerns about fluctuations in foreign exchange rates, which have increased the cost of research equipment and other requirements, particularly those purchased from abroad. The changes in exchange rates have forced some researchers to adjust their budgets, affecting the scope and completion of planned studies. This has added to the existing challenges faced by researchers in Uganda.

The upcoming research conference at UCU will bring together academics, researchers, and stakeholders to present findings from a long-term research project examining different aspects of life and development. The conference will provide a platform for researchers to share their work, discuss funding challenges, and explore ways in which universities can contribute to addressing Uganda's social and economic problems.

The Bishop of Busoga, Rt. Rev. Prof. Grace Lubale, is expected to attend the conference as chief guest, while Bank of Uganda Deputy Governor Prof. Augustus Nuwagaba will deliver the keynote address. The conference will feature discussions on research findings, funding challenges, and the role of universities in addressing Uganda's development needs.

The researchers' call for increased government funding is timely, as Uganda continues to face significant development challenges. The country's universities and research institutions have a critical role to play in addressing these challenges, but require adequate funding to do so effectively. The government's response to this call will be crucial in determining the future of research and innovation in Uganda.

The UCU researchers' concerns are part of a broader debate on the need for increased investment in research and development in Uganda. The country's National Development Plan emphasizes the importance of research and innovation in driving economic growth and addressing social challenges. However, more needs to be done to support researchers and ensure that they have the resources they need to undertake high-quality research.
