In a remarkable display of ubuntu, South African diplomatic staff in Nigeria have pooled their resources to secure the safe return of a three-year-old toddler to his family in Johannesburg. The child's mother, a 38-year-old woman from Brakpan, was arrested in July at Abuja's international airport for attempting to smuggle 5.75kg of heroin into Nigeria.
The woman, whose name has not been released, was sentenced to 25 years in prison on September 17 after pleading guilty to the charges. Following her sentencing, the South African high commission in Abuja was granted custody of her child, with a court order directing officials to arrange his return to South Africa as soon as possible.
The child's mother had nominated her father to care for the boy during her incarceration, but the family could not afford for the grandfather to travel to Abuja to collect the child. With time of the essence, the high commission explored alternative options, including crowdfunding through a South African community group in Nigeria.
However, with approximately R25,000 needed to cover the costs, diplomatic staff decided to cover the expenses themselves. According to Bobby J Moroe, South Africa's high commissioner in Abuja, it was "quite exceptional" for diplomatic staff to come together and raise money to ensure the safe return of the toddler to his grandfather in South Africa.
A South African diplomat, Jerry Sibanyoni, was assigned to accompany the boy from Abuja to Lagos and on to Johannesburg, where he was handed over to his grandfather at OR Tambo International Airport. Sibanyoni described the experience as a "remarkable story", highlighting the core values of ubuntu that guided their actions.
Sibanyoni revealed that he and the boy had formed a strong bond during their journey together, with the child becoming emotional when it was time to part ways. Reassuring the boy that he was going to be with his grandfather, Sibanyoni said that protocol was set aside in this instance, and they did what was best for the child.
The toddler arrived at OR Tambo International Airport early yesterday, bringing an end to his ordeal. The South African diplomatic mission's efforts demonstrate the extent to which ubuntu can inspire individuals to act in the best interests of others, particularly in times of need.
