A tragic accident occurred on Ngong Road in Kenya early on Thursday morning, resulting in the deaths of two pedestrians and injuring three others. The incident happened at around 6:40 a.m. at the Wahuu Road junction, also known as Kenol Stage. A vehicle lost control and rammed into pedestrians waiting at the stage. The driver, heading from Karen towards the city centre, veered to the extreme left and struck the pedestrians.
The two victims who died at the scene were identified as 16-year-old Hafsa Mohammed and 29-year-old Lianzika John. Their bodies were taken to the City Mortuary for post-mortem examinations. The injured victims included 15-year-old Patrick Wambua, who suffered a fractured right leg and a head injury, 16-year-old Anna Nyambura, who sustained chest and hip pain, as well as bruises on her right hand, and an adult, Patricia Muhalia, who sustained minor injuries.
Among the injured was a Grade 9 pupil at Milimani Primary School, Anna Nyambura, who was rescued and taken to hospital but later managed to attend school and sit her KPSEA examinations. Despite her injuries, Nyambura showed remarkable resilience and determination. She explained that she was hit by the vehicle while waiting at the stage and was later rescued by people who took her to hospital.
The vehicle involved in the accident was later set on fire by an angry crowd, with the wreckage taken to Karen Police Station for inspection. Members of the public prevented a breakdown truck from recovering the damaged vehicle before it was set ablaze. The driver of the vehicle is receiving treatment and is expected to be arraigned upon discharge.
Nyambura, who was hit by the vehicle, shared her experience of being involved in the accident and later sitting her examinations. She said that she was taken to hospital and later to school, where she sat her examinations in a separate room. Nyambura expressed her fear of repeating the examinations but was relieved to have completed them.
The circumstances surrounding the crash are expected to be investigated further through vehicle inspection and post-mortem examinations. The police will likely look into the cause of the accident and determine whether any parties were at fault. The incident has raised concerns about road safety and the need for caution when driving.
The incident has also highlighted the resilience and determination of the victims, particularly Anna Nyambura, who showed remarkable courage in the face of adversity. The community has been affected by the incident, and authorities are expected to take measures to prevent similar accidents in the future.
