The Ghana Education Service (GES) has recommended the removal of two teachers from their duty roles at Techiman Senior High School (SHS) in the Bono East Region after they assaulted a 17-year-old student. The incident, which occurred on October 23, 2026, was captured on video and circulated on social media, prompting a disciplinary committee to be set up by the school. The committee's report led to the recommendation for the teachers' removal and for them to pay the medical bills of the victim from their personal resources.

According to Deputy Director-General of GES, Dr. Issahaque Munawaru, preliminary reports indicated that the student had been bullying form one students and demanding money from them. The reports suggested that the student used the metal part of a belt to beat the form one students who refused to give him money, which Dr. Munawaru described as extortion. However, he stressed that this did not justify the teachers' actions, saying it was wrong for them to physically assault the student.

Dr. Munawaru said the teachers, Jerry Jones Owusu Bekoe, 37, an English Language teacher, and Ameyaw Adusa, 44, an Information and Communications Technology teacher, failed to report the incident to management after it occurred. The GES Code of Conduct prohibits teachers from administering corporal punishment, subjecting students to painful postures, threatening students with harm, or physically assaulting them. The proposed sanctions are preliminary recommendations, and the GES will consider the outcome of the police investigation before taking a final decision.

The Bono East Regional Police Command arrested the two teachers on Sunday, November 1, 2026. Preliminary investigations indicated that the incident occurred at about 4 p.m. on October 23, 2026, on the school premises. The teachers allegedly confronted the Form Three student over claims that he had assaulted two Form One students, which led to the violent confrontation.

Dr. Munawaru said the GES had been informed of the arrests and would cooperate with the police by providing any information required for the investigation. The outcome of the criminal investigation and any subsequent prosecution would inform the Service's final disciplinary action. He also disclosed that the student was reported to be doing well and that the GES was continuing to provide guidance and counselling support for both learners and staff.

The incident has raised concerns about the conduct of teachers and the measures in place to prevent such incidents. Dr. Munawaru said the GES regularly reminded teachers of their professional responsibilities through induction programmes, professional learning community sessions, and continuous professional development activities organised each term. The Service is also providing support for the victim and his family.

The police investigation is ongoing, and the GES is awaiting the outcome before taking further action. The two key points from this incident are: the GES's swift action in recommending the removal of the teachers, and the need for teachers to be reminded of their professional responsibilities.
