Tunisia's TAP has joined a global initiative to develop standards for AI applications in the news sector, launched by China's Xinhua News Agency. The initiative aims to promote international cooperation and responsible use of AI technology in the media. TAP is one of 22 organizations from around the world that have joined the initiative, including Russia's TASS news agency and Vietnam News Agency.
The initiative is based on a framework that focuses on data governance, model application, content security, risk management, and evaluation of AI applications. It also aims to establish channels for exchanging experiences and best practices among international media organizations. The framework is built on Xinhua's experience in developing standards for AI applications in the news sector.
The initiative targets several areas of cooperation, including addressing challenges related to AI use in journalism, such as news credibility, source verification, and content generated by AI. It also covers issues like data quality, model evaluation, and intellectual property protection. Participating organizations will engage in experience sharing, joint research, and capacity building.
The initiative is guided by principles of openness, equality, and shared benefits, while respecting the autonomy of media organizations in their technological choices and professional workflows. The initiative comes as the news sector is undergoing rapid transformations due to AI, which presents both opportunities and challenges.
The global media initiative coincides with the 7th Global Media Summit in Beijing, which will take place in November 2026. The summit will bring together around 500 delegates from over 330 media organizations, research centers, and government agencies from 112 countries and regions.
TAP's participation in the initiative reflects its commitment to harnessing AI technology to improve its journalism practices while ensuring the integrity and credibility of its reporting. The agency will work with other participating organizations to develop and implement standards for AI applications in the news sector.
The development of AI standards in journalism is a critical issue, as AI technology increasingly influences the way news is gathered, produced, and disseminated. The initiative aims to promote responsible AI use and ensure that the benefits of AI are equitably distributed among media organizations worldwide.
