On November 2, 2026, Sousse Governor Sufyan Al-Tanfuri chaired a working session focused on the environmental situation in the Marda region of Shatt Al-Ruman. This area is a critical intersection point between Wadi Laya and Wadi Al-Kabir, flowing into Wadi Al-Hammam. The meeting aimed to follow up on the implementation of commitments made by concerned authorities to clear watercourses and riverbeds.

During the session, the Regional Commission for Agricultural Development presented an overview of various projects related to clearing watercourses in the region. The Regional Environment Directorate also provided an update on interventions and challenges related to urban watercourses. These discussions highlighted the complexities of managing water resources and environmental conservation in the area.

Key agreements were reached during the session, including the clearing of 1.5 kilometers of Wadi Al-Hammam from the well towards the highway, passing through Marda, as part of an agreement between Akouda Municipality and the National Sanitation Office. This work is set to begin in mid-November 2026. Additionally, the Regional Commission for Agricultural Development committed to clearing 1.5 kilometers of watercourse from Marda towards Wadi Laya.

Further measures were agreed upon, including correspondence with central administrations to accelerate the programming of watercourse embankment development and the definition of easements and public water domains. This aims to curb random and improper exploitation of watercourse embankments. The installation of surveillance cameras at agreed-upon points was also planned to combat the disposal of construction and demolition waste in watercourse areas.

The session was attended by various officials, including the Governor's General Secretary, deputy mayors, and heads of regional and local councils. Representatives from the Regional Agricultural Development Commission, the Regional Environment Directorate, and the National Sanitation Office were also present. The meeting demonstrated a collaborative effort to address environmental challenges in the region.

These efforts reflect a broader commitment to environmental conservation and sustainable development in Tunisia. Recent initiatives in Sousse include a partnership between the SOS Children's Villages association and the National School of Engineers. The city is also set to host the third International Conference on Digital Financial Intelligence from November 23 to 25, 2026.

The environmental session in Sousse underscores the importance of coordinated action among authorities, local councils, and specialized agencies in addressing environmental issues. By working together, these stakeholders aim to improve the environmental situation in Wadi Al-Hammam and similar regions, promoting sustainable practices and effective resource management.
