Speeding has been cited as the second leading cause, with 740 accidents, or 21.87% of the total, while failure to respect priority has been cited as the third leading cause, with 263 accidents, or 7.77% of the total.
The National Observatory for Road Safety has also analyzed the causes of fatalities and injuries in road accidents. According to the data, speeding has been the leading cause of fatalities, accounting for 360 deaths, or 36.73% of the total. Driver error and lack of attention have been cited as the second leading cause of fatalities, with 177 deaths, while reckless driving has been cited as the third leading cause, with 65 fatalities.
The governorate of Tunis has recorded the highest number of road accidents, with 403 incidents resulting in 76 fatalities and 496 injuries. The governorate of Mahdia has recorded the second highest number of accidents, with 284 incidents resulting in 47 fatalities and 349 injuries. On the other hand, the governorate of Kébili has recorded the lowest number of accidents, with 43 incidents resulting in 13 fatalities and 65 injuries.
The National Observatory for Road Safety has noted that the data is based on preliminary information and is subject to daily updates. The observatory has also cautioned that the geographical distribution of accidents and fatalities should be interpreted with caution, as it does not take into account demographic and socio-economic factors that may affect the accuracy of the data.
The alarming rise in traffic fatalities in Tunisia has raised concerns about road safety in the country.
