The main causes of road accidents in Tunisia have been identified as lack of attention and distraction, accounting for 1,112 accidents (30.75%), followed by speeding, which caused 777 accidents (21.49%). Other contributing factors include failure to respect priority, resulting in 283 accidents (7.83%), and reckless crossing of the road, which led to 269 accidents (7.44%).
The observatory's data also reveals that speeding is the leading cause of fatal accidents, responsible for 377 deaths (36.64%) and 1,070 injuries (22.80%). Lack of attention and distraction resulted in 190 fatalities and 1,227 injuries, while failure to keep to the right caused 95 deaths and 363 injuries.
Regionally, the governorate of Tunis has recorded the highest number of road accidents, with 459 incidents resulting in 86 fatalities and 563 injuries. The governorate of Mahdia follows closely, with 303 accidents causing 49 deaths and 375 injuries. Conversely, the governorate of Kébili reported the lowest number of road accidents, with 44 incidents resulting in 13 fatalities and 66 injuries.
The observatory's data also shows that August 2026 was the deadliest month, with 146 fatalities and 542 injuries, while April 2026 recorded the highest number of accidents, with 455 incidents resulting in 105 deaths and 568 injuries. The data is based on information received by the observatory up to September 18, 2026, and is subject to daily updates.
