In the Silyana governorate of Tunisia, two water supply projects are currently underway to enhance access to clean drinking water in rural areas. These projects are a collaboration between the Kuwait-based Direct Aid organization and the Tunisian Ministry of Agriculture, Water Resources, and Maritime Fishing, with support from local authorities. The initiatives aim to bolster the region's water infrastructure and improve conditions for accessing clean drinking water.
The first project, located in the Sadin Makshar area, began in 2020 and involves drilling a deep well and equipping it with solar power. The second phase includes laying a 6-kilometer network of water channels to connect the area to the water supply network. The cost of laying these channels is approximately 735,000 Tunisian dinars, with work currently 45% complete and expected to finish within a month, pending no technical or natural obstacles.
Once completed, the Sadin Makshar project will be handed over to the Regional Commission for Agricultural Development, allowing it to be used by local water associations and continuing to provide clean drinking water to the area. The second project, in the Bou Arada delegation, involves drilling and equipping a deep well, with drilling already completed and equipment and connection work ongoing.
The cost of equipment and connection for the Bou Arada project is around 412,000 Tunisian dinars, not including drilling costs. Upon completion, this project will be delivered to the Tunisian Company for Water Exploitation and Distribution, which will manage and operate it. The total cost of both projects will be determined once all work is completed, taking into account various components such as drilling, equipment, channel laying, and connection work.
These projects hold significant importance for the targeted rural areas, particularly given the challenges some communities face in ensuring a regular supply of clean drinking water. The new facilities are expected to improve water services and alleviate some of the issues faced by local residents. The management of the two projects will differ after completion, with the Sadin Makshar well under the supervision of the Regional Commission for Agricultural Development and the Bou Arada project managed by the Tunisian Company for Water Exploitation and Distribution.
Sami Al-Saqni, representative of the Kuwait-based Direct Aid organization in Tunisia, highlighted that the organization is committed to supporting development projects in Tunisia, particularly in areas related to water supply and agricultural development. The organization's efforts aim to contribute to improving living conditions in rural areas and enhancing access to basic services such as clean drinking water.
The progress of these water supply projects in Silyana reflects ongoing efforts to address water scarcity and improve infrastructure in Tunisia's rural regions. Upon completion, the projects are expected to have a positive impact on the daily lives of residents in these areas, providing them with reliable access to clean drinking water and contributing to the region's overall development.
